Ciclopica >From Rodin to Giacometti
The exhibition "Ciclopica: the great international sculpture Da Rodin a Giacometti", curated by Vincenzo Sanfo, organized by Sicilia Musei in collaboration with the International Diffusion Italy Group, is a great overview of the concept of sculpture, through almost two centuries. In fact, starting from the end of the nineteenth century, we reach our days. The beginning of the exhibition itinerary provides a didactic preview of the directions of universal sculpture, with three examples that enclose the lines of the path, starting with a head of stone Buddha, from China from the 16th century, a Hellenistic sculpture and a group of ancient African sculptures used for ritual masks. This, to symbolize the three directions of international culture such as Africa, Asia and Europe and as a sign of the sources of inspiration for international sculpture. But in addition to a geographical location, with artists from all over the world, from the United States to China, from South East Asia to Africa and from Europe to Canada and South America, the exhibition has among its peculiarities , also that of representing the variety of materials used by the artists. In fact, in addition to traditional materials, such as Marble and Bronze, there will be unusual materials, such as paper, terracotta, polyurethane, plastic, fiberglass and many other materials, signifying the richness of the artistic inspiration of contemporary art and the innumerable possibilities that are offered today to the artists of our time. To these didactic aspects, we add the list of masters present in the exhibition which is very long and includes almost all the greats from Rodin, present here with a sketch by the "Borghesi di Calais", coming from French museums, up to two extraordinary masterpieces of Alberto Giacometti, passing through Marino Marini, Mimmo Paladino, Arman, Pablo Picasso, Asger Jorn, Luigi Mainolfi, Henry Moore and many, many others. The panorama of the works ranges from monumental works, such as those by Sebastián the greatest living Mexican sculptor, heir to the monumentality of Diego Rivera to chamber works, such as the heads of the Xi'an Warriors, revisited by the great Chinese artist Zhang Hong Mei, now an international must, contended as it is by collectors across the world. Up to the works of artists, unjustly fallen into oblivion, like the masterpiece of Mario Giansone, a sculptor little known to the general public, but who boasted among his loyal collectors, personalities like Umberto and Gianni Agnelli, who furnished the SAI building with his works. A singular character, he refused the invitation to the Venice Biennale and the donation of one of his works to Peggy Guggenheim, who wanted it in the collection. In Syracuse he will be present with a masterpiece such as "The Stone of Love". The rediscoveries will be many, like that of Franco Garelli, one of the protagonists of Italian sculpture of the sixties, flanked by personalities such as Arnaldo Pomodoro, Floriano Bodini, Giuseppe Maraniello, Giuliano Vangi, Ivan Theimer, Igor Mitoraj, Piero Gilardi, Stefano Arienti, Rabarama, Pietro Cascella, Umberto Mastroianni, just to name a few.
