Mimmo Rotella

He was born in Catanzaro in 1918. He attended courses at the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, and soon after the degree he moved to Rome. In 1945 he began painting and in 1951 he shows for the first time some abstract-geometrical works. The first phase of his activity is characterized by experimentation with different styles, that will lead him to new languages after the war. In this period he can be considered as the predecessor of the new-dada in Italy. The 1953 is the year of the first décollages, a technique characterized by the torn of advertising posters on the streets whose pieces are then glued on canvas. In the following years he improved his technique, that became collage double décollage, with the torn of posters, glued on canvas and torn again. In 1961 he joined the New Realism movement of Pierre Restany. Moved in Paris in 1964 he worked again on definitions of a new technique: the Mec Art, where he realized works using mechanical procedures on emulsified canvas. His Plastiforme series dates from 1975: torn posters placed on polyurethane support with the aim to give them a three-dimensional view. He came back to painting at the half of the Eighties: Cinecittà 2 where he resumes the theme of cinema with huge canvas' size and with the series Sovrapitture made by décollage and on iron plate; these painting works on torn posters and attached on metal panels are characteristic of his latest period.
