Gustavo Aceves

Gustavo Aceves

The work of Gustavo Aceves, a self-taught artist born in Mexico City in 1957, is characterized by a very own revisitation of the great masters of western pictorical tradition, from Rembrandt to Bacon, as it is clearly evident in his obsessive, almost maniacal dissection of the body. His painting, at first sight so far away from the latin-american stereotype, has instead an important relationship with the michelangiolesque gigantism of mexican murales, from which he takes the predilection for great sizes. Gustavo Aceves that splits his artistic experience between Mexico and Paris is, within his reserved attitude, is an artist of cult, researched by many collectors that do not get dazzled from the lights of an untidy contemporaneousness. His work is surely closer to a kind of collectionism of rare and precious artists such as Lucian Freud or Antonio Lopez Garcia, and from this kind of collectionism he is protected and researched, both for the quality of his painting and for his human being. Gustavo Aceves is a particular artist if compared to contemporary artists, but in this kind of attitude it lays the key and the strength for a great future.
